Sasquatch Customs — Lowrider Series — 1957 Chevy Bel Air Convertible

There are cars. And then there are icons.

The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is not just a car. It has not been just a car since approximately nineteen fifty seven when it rolled off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan and immediately made every other vehicle on the road look like it was trying too hard or not hard enough depending on which direction you were coming from. The tailfins. The chrome. The two tone paint and the wide whitewall tires and the particular confidence of a car that knew exactly what it was and exactly what it was doing and exactly what effect it was going to have on everyone who saw it. The 1957 Bel Air did not arrive. It made an entrance. And it has been making that same entrance every single time it appears in public for the last sixty seven years without once losing a single degree of its original impact.

Now imagine it in black. Convertible top down. Sitting on a set of gold Dayton wire spoke wheels that nobody from 1957 could have anticipated but that somehow look like they were always supposed to be there. Lowered. Slammed. Working the hydraulics in a way that the Chevrolet engineers of the Eisenhower era absolutely did not design for and would have had strong opinions about if they could see it now — and they would have been wrong, because it looks magnificent, and the proof is standing right there next to it eight feet tall and covered in fur and hitting the switches with the practiced ease of someone who has been building and driving the finest lowriders in the Pacific Northwest since long before any of us showed up.

Sasquatch did not discover the 1957 Bel Air. He rescued it. He took one of the most beautiful cars ever built by an American manufacturer and he asked the question that the best builders always ask — what if we kept everything that made it great and added everything that makes it greater — and the answer was black paint, gold Dayton wire wheels, hydraulics, and a convertible top that stays down because when you are driving something this good the sky should be part of the experience.

This shirt is for the Bel Air faithful. For the 1957 Chevy community that spans every corner of car culture from the show field to the lowrider scene to the kustom kulture world to the collector community because the 1957 Bel Air belongs to all of them equally and none of them exclusively. For the lowrider builders and the hydraulics faithful and the wire wheel community and the candy paint believers and the switch hitters who know that the best canvas for a lowrider build is always the one with the best bones — and they do not come with better bones than a black 1957 Bel Air convertible sitting in the afternoon sun on a set of gold Daytons while Sasquatch works the switches and the whole parking lot stops and stares.

They always stop. They always stare. Nobody ever regrets it.
