Sasquatch Customs — Camping Series — 1989 Toyota Mini Truck Camper
The pine trees know him here.
He has been coming to this spot longer than the forest service road that leads to it has been on any map. Longer than the campground down the valley with the numbered sites and the fire rings and the bear boxes and the camp hosts who drive around in golf carts at nine in the evening reminding everyone about quiet hours. Longer than the hikers with the matching gear and the GPS coordinates and the carefully curated Instagram posts about getting away from it all while remaining comprehensively connected to all of it. Sasquatch was here before all of that. The pine trees know him. The dirt knows the weight of his footsteps. The clearing knows the particular shape of his lawn chair and the particular quality of his silence when he is exactly where he wants to be with exactly the right truck parked next to him and absolutely nothing on the schedule.
The truck is a 1989 Toyota. Mini truck. Camper shell on the back — the kind that is just tall enough to sleep in and just right enough to make everything else unnecessary. It has been everywhere the forest service roads go and several places they do not. It has aired down on Friday afternoons and aired back up on Sunday evenings and carried everything Sasquatch needed and nothing he did not and started every single time without complaint or drama or the need for encouragement. It is not the biggest truck. It is not the most powerful truck. It is the right truck — which in the Toyota mini truck world has always been the only relevant metric and the community that has been keeping these trucks running for thirty five years knows it better than anyone.
The lawn chair is out. The pine trees are tall and close and smell the way pine trees smell in the late afternoon when the light comes through them at a low angle and turns everything gold for about forty five minutes before the sun drops and the temperature follows and the whole forest gets quiet in a way that no other quiet quite replicates. Sasquatch is settled. The 1989 Toyota is parked. The camper shell is doing what camper shells do. The forest is doing what forests do. And everything is exactly right in a way that is very difficult to explain to someone who has not felt it personally and does not need explanation for someone who has.
This shirt is for the Toyota mini truck faithful. For the camper shell community and the overlanders and the dispersed camping crowd and the forest road explorers and the people who think the best campsite is the one you have to work a little to get to and the best view is the one nobody else found yet. For the Toyota community that has been running these small, reliable, impossibly capable little trucks into places that have no business being accessible and coming back out the other side with stories that sound made up until you see the photos. For the pine tree people — the ones who feel more at home in a forest than anywhere else on earth and who have a truck that feels the same way.
And for everyone who has ever parked somewhere that the pine trees know and sat down in a lawn chair and felt, for a moment, like the whole world had gotten very small and very quiet and very exactly right.
Sasquatch has been feeling that way for a very long time. The 1989 Toyota got him there. The pine trees welcomed him back.
